In the 1700s, herdsmen around Herefordshire England discovered that these red bodied, white-faced cattle produced the tender and flavorful beef that was fit for the kings and queens. Later, in the 19th century, some progressive American farmers began importing these majestic Herefords to grow in the western frontier. Since 1817, generations of American families have been raising Hereford Cattle. In 1881, the American Hereford Association was formed to unite these local families in an effort to raise the highest quality cattle, producing the highest quality beef. Since 1995, Certified Hereford Beef® has been marketing this beef to American families from American families. Certified Hereford Beef® is a premium, differentiated beef brand that provides an eating experience only the Hereford breed can produce.     Originally from Herefordshire, England, United Kingdom. Beginning with royalty, Herefords have been bred for centuries to deliver the best eating experience.

  • Herefords Come to the U.S.

    February 1, 1817

    Henry Clay, Kentucky statesman, brought Herefords to the U.S. in 1817. He began to breed these cattle to the rugged cattle of the west to create a more desirable steak.

    June 1, 1881

    Charles Gudgell and Thomas Alexander “Governor” Simpson were relatively unknown in the cattle industry in 1881 when Simpson traveled to England in search of a bull that would change the beef industry. This bull is known as the father of the Hereford breed and named Anxiety the 4th.

  • The Hereford Breed Association Began


    June 22, 1881

    A few of these early breeders came together in Chicago on June 22, 1881. The result was the foundation of the American Hereford Cattle Breeders Association, later renamed the American Hereford Association (AHA).

    AHA is the first breed association to hold a national one-breed show. This would be the basis to continue choosing the best animals and genetics to improve the breed.

  • Hereford Cattle Become a Popular Breed

    January 21, 1900

    At the turn of the century, 125,000 Hereford cattle have been registered and the breed has quickly become the most popular in the country.

    The AHA is the first beef breed association to own its own headquarters; permanent residence is established at 300 West 11th St., Kansas City, MO.

    The American Hereford Association outgrows its first office in Kansas City, MO. The President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, dedicates the second AHA headquarters at 715 Hereford Drive, Kansas City, MO.

    Seeing a vision and understanding that youth will be our future, the American Hereford Association hosts the first All-American Junior Hereford Show at Kansas State University.

    With over 2,500 family ranches now registering Hereford genetics AHA moves to its third headquarters on 1501 Wyandotte Street, Kansas City, MO. This location remains as the office location today.

    The American Hereford Association officially establishes the Certified Hereford Beef brand to market the incredible beef our ranchers work hard to produce.

    The Hereford breed continues to grow in popularity worldwide as AHA membership grows to more than 4,000 family ranches, with genetics marketed around the world.

    More than 50 million pounds of Certified Hereford Beef are sold and marketed worldwide by our now 6,000 local ranchers all over the U.S.A. They continue to work hard and use the time honored traditions that were handed down from their parents to produce the highest quality beef in the world.
